    1. For the DELL Optiplex 780, I did not try to install Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 on it. But it should be work if your CPU is support 64bits. Please let me know your result. Thank you.

  4. Hi Mr.Fung i'm trying to install Server 2003 Standard 32bit on our Optiplex 790, we can't afford Server 2008 licenses and since we are a government institution in the Caribbean we must work under the law.

I keep getting the BSOD 0x0000007B error, it says something about HDD drivers, do this drivers work for Server 2003 ?

    1. Hello DarkWolf,

I have been install Server 2003 on the Optiplex 790 before by change the AHCI to ATA mode. "Press F2 on system startup (DELL Logo screen when the machine power on) (to enter BIOS). Choose SATA Operation >Drives >ATA Mode > Save and Exit."

If you still got a floppy disk and floppy drive, you may try to install the AHCI driver (Intel Rapid Storage Technology (Pre-OS Install)) (http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/hk/en/hkbsd1/DriverDetails/Product/optiplex-790?driverId=4HM0V&osCode=WW1&fileId=2939775061) for the OS installation.

Maybe you can also try to customerize the Windows Server 2003 installation disk to intergrate this AHCI driver for the installation. (Reference: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/Windows2003/AdminTips/Miscellaneous/UsingnLitetoIntegrateRAIDDriversintoWindowsInstallationMedia.html)

Please let me know the above solution is it able to solve your problem. Thank you.

  5. Good Morning Mr.Fung! I'm gladly reporting you my success in this small experiment, we have successfully installed Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition 32Bit on one of our Dell Optiplex 790, i used nLite to slipstream the SATA drivers you mentioned above and it worked perfect!
Now i'm currently working on a second computer i will try this new method you suggest, i will keep you posted as soon as we make a successful install.

Also a quick note, the Intel AMT System, is anyone is using it on Server 2003 on Optiplex 790, mine keeps saying 'disabled', so i just uninstalled the software, and on drivers all the mentioned above on this post worked out great you just have to make sure you use 32Bit versions, i still have the 'Location 65535 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus)' warning on my Computer Manager, but since its a server purpose computer, i don't care about sound.
